Dixie M. Spehar has lived in the Florida Keys for over fourteen years. She has two grown children and eight grandchildren. Dixie is a business professional, who retired from a major brokerage firm prior to coming to work for the County. She has five years experience working as a Commissioner’s Administrative Aide.

Commissioner Spehar was re-elected to another four-year term and has gained the reputation of a defender of personal and property rights. Her campaign promise was to listen to her constituents, provide courteous representation for all of Monroe County residents and build consensus – not contention.

Commissioner Spehar is serving on several boards and committees to address healthcare and health insurance issues in Monroe County. She has chaired workshops and seminars, pushed for the passing of legislation to provide dental care for needy children and been a member of a task force responsible for performing a health insurance needs analysis for the Keys.

Commissioner Spehar has fought for the rights of both man and animal and some of her accomplishments are as follows:

She sponsored a human rights ordinance to prohibit discrimination of any kind in the areas of housing, financial transactions, religious practices and employment even before the Employment Non-Discrimination Act was introduced.

She directed her efforts to assist individuals to find a way to increase fence heights for safety.

Sponsored a project to beautify a County beach using the art of children and
Introduced legislation to ensure that one percent of the funding for construction of County buildings goes to Art in Public Places including industrial as well as decorative art.
