The Green Initiative task force was created on June 18, 2008 when the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution No. 177-2008.Originally called the Green Building Code Task Force, it was put in place to make recommendations to the Building Department to adopt local technical amendments for the Florida Building Code to include “green” building practices.

Membership of the task force consists of two (2) appointments made by each commissioner and one (1) appointment from each of the eight municipalities and utilities.  Each member shall serve a term of one year renewable for an additional year upon expiration.   With the task force not scheduled to meet until September 29, 2008, Resolution No. 345-2008 was adopted on October 15, 2008 changing the membership terms to begin September 29th and giving the task force a new sunset date of October 1, 2010.

On April 15, 2009 the Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution No. 121-2009 changing the name of the task force from the Green Building Code Task Force to the Green Initiative Task Force and changing the scope of authority having the task force make recommendations to the BOCC rather than to the Building Department.  Recommendations are to be made not on local technical amendments to the Florida Building code, but rather recommendations of environmentally sound practices and techniques to protect the environment.

County Staff members assigned to assist the task force:
Joseph M. Paskalik, Sr. Director/Building Official
Rich Jones, Sr. Administrator Marine Resources
Natileene Cassel, Assistant County Attorney
Linda D. Painter, Administrative Assistant
