Construction to Begin on Remainder of U.S. 1 Between Key Largo and Florida City
Key Largo—Construction to rebuild the remaining 11 miles of U.S. 1 from Florida City to Key Largo—known locally as the Stretch—began on Monday, March 17.
The construction on the last portion of the Stretch, which extends from Mile Marker 117 to SW 344th Street in Florida City, includes roadway widening, installation of a median barrier to prevent head-on collisions, the addition of an auxiliary lane in Florida City, replacement of the C-111 Canal Bridge and wildlife crossings. Completion is scheduled for spring 2011.
During construction, two driving lanes will be maintained throughout the corridor, but some nighttime closures may occur. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph, and Road Ranger free service trucks will patrol the construction zone to assist stranded motorists.
Construction on the first project to reconstruct the Stretch began in April 2005 just north of Key Largo and included roadway widening and construction of a new bridge over Jewfish Creek. That project, which includes demolition of the old bridge and removal of the Lake Surprise Causeway, is scheduled for completion in mid-2009. Construction on the second project, which extends from MM 113 to MM 116 and includes roadway widening, began in September 2006 and will be complete in summer 2008.
