Key West~ -- Members of the Pennsylvania Conservation Corps (PCC) came to the Keys for some Autumn R&R: Rebuilding and Repairing. ~ Monroe County Mayor Sonny McCoy presented the team with an Honorary Conch Certificate and each received a letter of recognition: On behalf of the citizens of the Florida Keys, I, as Mayor of Monroe County, recognize the following Pennsylvania Conservation Corps
members for their invaluable service in helping our community recover from the destruction caused by Hurricane Wilma:
The PCC members left Pennsylvania on Nov. 13 and will remain in Florida until Dec. 10. They spent Thanksgiving lending a helping hand in the Florida Keys, working with Habitat for Humanity to install temporary roofing and repair homes damaged by Hurricane Wilma. Bill Loewy, Director Habitat for Humanity said “Your spirit of humanity will not be forgotten.”
Faye Peterson, Key West: “They saved my life and my home. My house was a total loss. I told them that they were sent from Heaven; but they said ‘No, we’re from Harrisburg.” ~ “In helping people’s lives return to normal, you brought hope back into our community.” Mayor McCoy said. The Mayor said that the storm was the worst the Keys has seen in 100 years and jokingly added that he hopes not to see them again for 100 years—at least not for hurricane recovery work!
Paul Owens, PCC director, said this experience has been an eye-opener that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.” “As neighbors, distant ones, we’re thankful for the opportunity to help neighbors. |
