Only storm debris collected
The County’s final sweep for hurricane debris starts on Monday, December 12th. Only storm debris will be picked up. Hurricane debris does not include cars, boats, motor homes, campers, trailers, or regular construction debris (unless storm related) and placement of such items on the right of way will be considered illegal dumping and will be monitored for compliance and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Residents should separate storm debris into the following categories and place it at curbside in front of their residence only for pick up before December 12th:

·~vegetative debris
·~seaweed
·~non-vegetative debris, such as furniture, carpeting, plywood, sheet rock, aluminum, wood decking and fence material.
·~white goods~ (household appliances)
·~household hazardous waste

Debris placed anywhere other than in front of the resident’s home may constitute illegal dumping, a possible felony offense, and at a minimum can involve fees/penalties. Only storm related debris will be collected.  Residents should make provisions with licensed haulers for the removal of debris not hurricane generated.

Residents on private roads must bring their storm debris to the closest public right of way for pick up. This is the only instance where debris may be placed anywhere other than in front of the resident’s home. Monroe County Public Works crews are available to assist residents with moving their debris to the closest public right of way if residents call and request assistance.

To request assistance from Public Works, residents in the Lower Keys (Stock Island to Big Pine Key) should call 292-3519, and in the Upper Keys residents should call 852-7161. In order for Public Works to collect debris, it must be placed at the edge of the private roadway; crews will not enter residents’ yards.

Monroe County advises all residents who have damaged vehicles and water craft to contact their insurance carriers for direction in proper repair or disposal. If you observe illegal dumping please call the Sheriffs Office to assist the County in preventing further violations.

Any questions regarding storm debris should be directed to the Monroe County Solid Waste Department at 292-4432.
