The BOCC unanimously approved the naming of the planned Upper Keys Government Center located at the former Quay property the “Murray E. Nelson Key Largo Government and Cultural Center” at a special BOCC meeting held September 1st.
Commissioner Murray Nelson, District 5, was instrumental in the purchase of the former Quay site, and the eventual planning and proposed construction of the Upper Keys Government and Cultural Center. The proposed government center will bring county services to Key Largo and other Upper Keys residents.
There was an outpouring of citizens supporting the naming of the Government Center in honor of Commissioner Nelson, with comments such as, “this is a fitting tribute to this hardworking commissioner,” “you are a champion of habitat of the Upper Keys,” “Murray, you are my hero,” “integrity is the one quality that is synonymous with Murray Nelson,” and “you’re not only the Commissioner for the Upper Keys, but for the entire County.” Murray emotionally thanked everyone, stating “it has been an honor to serve you.” |
