Debris removal Continues
The County’s debris removal contractor has completed their first pass in the Upper Keys and should finish the Lower Keys first pass by the end of this week. As of the end of the day on Tuesday, November 15th, the contractor had collected 188,738 cubic yards of debris. During the first pass vegetative debris and non-vegetative debris (furniture, etc) was picked up. Seaweed and Household Hazardous Waste pick up will be included in the second pass. The second pass began in the Upper Keys November 15th and will last 7 to 10 days. The second pass has begun in areas of the Lower Keys such as Big Coppitt and Stock Island, Rockland Key. A second pass in the other areas of the Lower Keys will begin immediately after the first pass is completed. The second pass of the Lower Keys could last approximately 3 weeks.

To ensure proper removal, debris should be separated into the following categories and placed at curbside for pick up:

·       vegetative debris
·       seaweed
·       non-vegetative debris, such as furniture, carpeting, plywood, sheet rock, aluminum, wood decking and fence material.
·       white goods~ (household appliances)
·       household hazardous waste

Please keep storm debris separate from regular household trash pick up.

The County’s debris pick up does not include cars, boats, motor homes, campers, trailers, etc. Monroe County Emergency Operations Center is advising all residents who have damaged vehicles and water craft contact their insurance carriers for
direction in proper repair or disposal.

Any questions regarding storm debris should be directed to the Monroe County Solid Waste Department at 292-4432
