(Monroe County, FL) The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced a construction project will begin in early August. The project includes Flagler Avenue, CR-5, in Key West from near Bertha Street to near South Roosevelt Boulevard, SR-A1A, and landscaping on Lower Matecumbe Key between Mile Marker 74 and Mile Marker 77. The entire project is scheduled to last 150 days.
The construction work on Flagler Avenue includes resurfacing the roadway to improve the ride and safety for the many types of vehicles using this route, constructing ADA compliant pedestrian ramps, where practical, for the existing sidewalks and landscaping the medians on Flagler Avenue. Landscaping improvements will be made on Lower Matecumbe Key on the Bayside of SR-5/US-1 Overseas Highway.
To minimize impacts to local businesses and the motoring public for the Key West portion, all work requiring lane closures will occur during non-peak hours. Non-peak hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. One lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times. No lanes will be closed during Keys special events, as determined by the Engineer. No lanes will be closed on holidays or weekends. The Department will make every effort to announce lane closures prior to their need. No lane closures or traffic disruptions are expected on Lower Matecumbe Key as all the work is off SR-5 Overseas Highway.
During lane closures, motorists will be guided through the work zone by signs, flashing arrow panels, barricades and orange cones. The speed limit will remain at the existing posted speed of 30 M.P.H. Speeding fines are doubled when workers are present. Please use extra caution when traveling through the construction area; equipment, trucks and workers may be near or crossing the roadway. When traveling, allow a little extra time to reach your destination due to lane closures.
