Monroe County Joins the Fight Against Global Warming
Monroe County joined forces with other local governments in the fight against global warming on July 18, when the Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution endorsing the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The BOCC recognizes that low-lying coastal areas such as Monroe County are particularly at risk to the impacts of global warming, and are joining with communities across Florida and nationwide to reduce greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions county-wide.
The BOCC committed to joining ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability and agreed to undertake the Cities for Climate Protection® Campaign’s five milestones to reduce emissions. These milestones include assessing greenhouse gas emissions, establishing a reduction target, developing and implementing a plan to reach the target, and monitoring and reporting progress. The U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement suggests further actions, such as sustainable building practices, alternative energy, increasing fleet fuel efficiency, increasing recycling rates, and maintaining healthy forested areas. The county’s commitment to this grass-roots local government approach is a significant step toward long-term global warming pollution reduction.
