SR 5/US 1 Roadway Improvement Project Begins

SR 5/US 1 Roadway Improvement Project Begins
April 16, 2007 (MM 73.74 to MM 77.46)
FIN: 412484-1-52-01

(Monroe  County, FL) The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has
scheduled  a  construction project to begin April 16, 2007. This project
involves   roadway   widening,   milling   and   resurfacing   on   SR-5
(US-1/Overseas  Highway) from Toll Gate Boulevard (mile marker 73.74) to
the  southern  end  of  the  Lignumvitae  Bridge  (mile  marker  77.46).
Construction  is expected to last until early 2008 and cost an estimated
  $5.4 million.

The project on the Overseas Highway includes repaving and re-striping
the road, drainage improvements and widening of the shoulders. The paved
portion of the southbound shoulder will be widened from four to five
feet as has been implemented in many areas of Monroe County.  The paved
portion of the northbound shoulder will be widened from four to ten feet
to provide enough room for an emergency evacuation lane. This northbound
shoulder area is not a travel lane and is reserved for emergency
purposes only.   Other project-related improvements include: installing
erosion control material along Sea Oats Beach on the ocean side of the
road; relocation of the access to the frontage road near the Lignumvitae
Bridge; and constructing new center left turn lanes.  This will improve
the flow of traffic and enhance safety in the area.

It will be necessary to shift travel lanes and establish nighttime lane
closures in order to complete project-related work safely. At least one
lane will remain open in each direction during daytime hours and all
travel lanes will remain open during special events, holidays and
weekends.  In order to lessen impacts to traffic, workers will close
travel lanes, as necessary, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday through
Thursday nights. The Department will make every effort to announce lane
  closures prior to their need.

The  speed  limit  within  the project limits will be reduced to 40 MPH.
Speeding  fines  are  doubled  when workers are present. Access to local
residences  and  businesses  will  be maintained at all times, but there
will  be  times  when  individual  driveways  are  closed temporarily to
accommodate  project-related  work.  Project  personnel  will make every
effort  to  coordinate  with  property  owners  in advance of this work.
  Please  use  extra caution when traveling through the construction area;
equipment, trucks and workers may be near or crossing the roadway.  When
traveling,  allow  a  little extra time to reach your destination due to
  the lane closures.
