May 10, 2007 Monroe County Public Works continues to make progress on Phase 1 of the African Cemetery Memorial Project located at Higgs Beach. Monroe County Public Works crew and S & S Concrete Pumping this week poured a 61ft by 25ft concrete slab for the memorial. Phase two of the project will include decorative fencing, mosaics, plaques and landscaping.
The African Cemetery Memorial Project will commemorate 295 Africans buried in Key West. The memorial site is located at Higgs eBeach between the West Martello Towers and White Street Pier Aids Memorial.
Monroe County is utilizing funding appropriated through DAC1 / TDC for this project and is performing the structural work in house. The project is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2007. |
