May 29, 2007 The Key West International Airport recently accepted delivery of several pieces of new equipment. The 1 million dollars of safety and runway maintenance equipment was funded by FAA and airport passenger fees. The new equipment includes, portable runway illumination signs X’s, two mobile aircraft boarding devices with elevators to accommodate wheel chair boarding and de-boarding or passengers needing assistance and a staircase for traditional ground-loading of passengers,
motorized runway sweeper provides a safe and clean surface for aircraft landing, taxi and ramp parking, Tractor Sweeper and Loader to assist with post hurricane cleanup of runway, taxiways and parking ramps, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Vehicle a required firefighting vehicle for Key West International Airport based on the size, type and frequency of commercial aircraft landing. The Striker includes a High-Reach extendable turret with infrared camera and fuselage penetration nozzle, advanced lubrication system and bronze water pump.
The funding also included the restoration and repair of Key West International Airport’s1981 Oshkosh T-6 ARFF vehicle at a cost of 135k. The trucks engine and operating systems have been updated. The truck will now be assigned to the Marathon Airport where it will support the new commercial service program. |
