Florida Statutes Section 163.3174 authorizes the governing body of a county to create a Local Planning Agency.  The Monroe County Planning Commission was established in 1986, in concurrance  with the adoption of  the Land Development Regulations (See BOCC Ordinance 033-1986).

The Planning Commission  is defined in Monroe County Code Section 102-20.  The powers and duties of the Planning Commission are stated in  Monroe County Code Section 102-20(b)(1-10).

The Planning Commission consists of five (5) members.  One appointment is made by each member of the Board of County Commissioners. All members serve a term of two (2) years with no term limit; however each member must be reappointed.  (See Monroe County Code Section 102-20(d)(1-3))

There are two Ex-officio (non-voting) members:
Mr. Fred Sims of Monroe County Schools, and
