The Monroe County Florida Keys have long been known for their parks and beaches.  Visitors and locals alike take part in a variety of recreational activities including water sports, fishing and diving.  Park facilities offer areas for team sports and other social events.   The county also consists of several Federal and State preserves and parks.  The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners realized a need for a committee or board to take advisory responsibility of these areas and created the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board on June 30, 1983 with the adoption of Ordinance 018-1983.

The duties of the advisory board are the following:
1.) To periodically review the facilities, programs, management, costs, expenditures for maintenance and revenues and funding relative to the parks program.
2.) Cooperate with other recognized and approved county recreational groups.
3.) Recognize any improvements necessary and make recommendations to the County Commission to that effect as well as recommendations for new facilities and park recreational areas.
4.) The advisory board shall submit a report to the County Commission with a description of its activities and recommendations for each year.

Board membership consists of five members, one appointed by each of the Monroe County Commissioners.  The term of office for each member of this board is four years.
