The JGT Transit provides daily commuter bus services between Florida City and Homestead to Mile Marker 50 in Marathon a distance of over 75 miles. Fares are $1.85 each way and the bus makes 6 round trips daily from Florida City/Homestead to MM 50 in Marathon. Last year the JGT carried a total of 168,000 riders up and down the Keys and averages over 500 passengers a day. It is a hail system model to get on and off with no specific bus stops. The bus will stop only where it is safe to pull off the US 1 Highway to pickup and discharge passengers who flag the bus down.

The Julia Garcia Transit (JGT) is contracted by Miami-Dade Transit with federally subsidized funding provided by the Region 23 South Florida Workforce Welfare Transition funding to assist in employment for Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties which make up Workforce Region 23. The local Monroe Coordination/liaison for the JGT bus is the Monroe County Community Services Division Office located in Key West, Florida. Contact the Community Services Division Director Sheila Barker or her Assistant Sandy Molina for assistance concerning any JGT bus service issues at (305) 292-4500.

The Lower Keys Shuttle bus will run from Key West to Marathon to connect with the JGT bus schedules to provide full commuter bus services throughout the Florida Keys.  This will be the first time in the history of Monroe County that Keyswide commuter bus service will be available to residents of both counties.

Beginning on September 16, 2005, the cost of the Lower Keys Shuttle bus will be $2.00 per person each way.  There are scheduled stops in Key West, Boca Chica, Big Coppitt Key, Bay Point, Sugarloaf Key, Cudjoe Key, Summerland Key, Big Pine Key and Marathon.  There are also "on demand" stops along the way.  To find out where these stops are, you can call the office of Community Services Division (Sandy Molina) at (305) 292-4500.

Effective June 15, 2006 the new schedule (above) will go into effect.  You may call Myra Wittenberg at (305) 292-8160 for information on bus "passes" and prices.
