MONROE COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT
FPL TURKEY POINT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT EXERCISE
Press Release # 1 , Issued June 24, 2009 – 9 a.m. Key Largo Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
__________________________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Monroe County - Officials from Monroe County Emergency Management are closely monitoring events currently taking place in Homestead at Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant.
FPL has declared a General Emergency at the plant due to an attack by an armed force on the plant. There has been no release of radiation reported as a result of the attack. FPL has it’s own security force, and local law enforcement agencies have also responded. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has a representative at the scene and that agency will lend assistance as needed.
Monroe County residents – particularly those who live within 10 miles of the plant in the Ocean Reef Community and on Card Sound Road – should be paying close attention to what is happening. Information will be disseminated on local radio and television stations as it becomes available, as well as on a joint web site set up to release information in situations such as this: http://webtest.jointnewscenter.com. Information is also available on Monroe County’s web site at www.monroecounty-fl.gov .
Monroe County Emergency Management has opened the Key Largo Emergency Operations Center at a Level 2, and is monitoring this situation from that location as well as at FPL’s Headquarters in Miami.
