1912 Key West Sanborn map—page of map showing RR station in Key West.
The maps were mainly designed to help fire insurance agents determine the degree of damage to a property and show accurate information to help them determine risks and establish premiums. They showed the size (including color-coding), shape and construction of buildings (brick, adobe, frame, etc), dwellings (including hotels and churches), and other structures such as bridges, docks and barns. Along with fire stations, you could also find water facilities, sprinklers, hydrants, cisterns, and alarm boxes as well as firewalls, windows, doors, elevators and chimneys and roof types. The maps included street names, property boundaries and lot lines, and house and block numbers. Other information such as the latest census figures, prevailing winds; railroad lines and Indian reservations and topography were included. Today, the maps are an invaluable guide to inner-city history, land use, and historic preservation.
This collection of public domain maps was digitized from the printed maps held in the collections of the Smathers Libraries ' Map & Imagery Library, on the campus of the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL).

Images from the collection of the Monroe County Public Library depict the rich history of the Florida Keys. Early industries, such as sponging, shark fishing, turtle canning, and cigar manufacturing, are illustrated in vivid detail. Of special interest are the images of the building of Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway, construction of the Overseas Highway (designated a Florida Scenic Highway), development of the tourism industry, and the aftermath of devastating hurricanes. Images of the unique architecture, topography and ambience of early-1900's Keys are given particular attention in this digital collection. The original images are maintained at the Monroe County Public Library's Local History Department in Key West, Florida.

The Key Names Gazetteer provides “an alphabetical compilation of every place name for an island or key in the Florida Keys…keys included begin to the north with Virginia Key in Biscayne Bay, and end with the westernmost of the Dry Tortugas Keys.” The gazetteer was compiled by local historian Jim Clupper. Jim documented the evolution of these names using 1600’s Spanish sailing charts, sea captains’ logs from the 1700’s, and survey and expedition logs from the 1800’s. He traced local lore, squinted at tattered charts, deciphered illegible diaries, and literally immersed himself in the Keys.
